Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to mourn the passing of several, much loved websites into His welcoming arms.
Accident mangled corpses, amateur war footage and hideous birth defects were what Ogrish was all about. It forced you to realise what life was, you either looked at every single image or you vomited after the first and uninstalled your browser. Ogrish itself was a car accident, you know you shouldn't stare, but you just, couldn't, look, away. Now it points to LiveLeak, some bullshit YouTube clone.
The simplest ideas often make the best websites. The GroupHug theory was pure genius, let people confess what's on their minds completely anonymously and you'll see just how sad humanity can get. Some confessions are truly disturbing, others are plainly lies or teenagers venting their hormones. If even 10% of the stuff on GroupHug is true, the world is a very fucked up place.
It still exists, but there's only been a handful of new confessions approved over the last year. The webmaster says a lot of work is going on in the background, but we all know what that means.
If you don't know who Maddox is, then immediately turn in your interweb licence. Maddox is the strong, abusive father figure that we all wish we had, someone to tell us how things really were. His site became extremely popular in the early 2000s, even today it gets more hits than I could dream of.
Maddox wrote a book last year and apparently now he writes for Cracked, but it's the web that loves him like a rich, sick aunt. He made a grand total of 4 posts last year, and 8 the year before. I hate to say it, but I think it's time he was driven out to the forest and left to roam free.
Imagine Google, then imagine a Google for smart people. *cog-turning sounds* Yeah, I can't imagine that either. Google Answers was a place where you could ask a question and offer an amount of money for an answer from an "expert", the only caveat being that others could see your question and answer as well. Late in 2006, Google pulled the plug and Google Answers stopped taking new questions.
Like everything else in life, Google Answers was beaten by something cheaper and more lowbrow. Yahoo Answers is free and answers can come from anyone, which of course results in hilarity. It's the first time that I'm aware of that Yahoo got one up over Google.
Do you know of any other websites that have bitten the dust in the last year? Leave a comment and let me know.
