It's time to show just how much smarter I am than the rest of you. I've read another book!

What The Dead Know
What The Dead Know by Laura Lippman

What The Dead Know by Laura Lippman. Thankfully, the cover lets you know that this is a novel. That was a real help, I nearly smoked it. Laura Lippman writes crime stories, a genre that us unstimulated worker drones apparently can't get enough of. Despite containing zero battlemechs, harem girls or alternate World War II histories, I enjoyed reading it.

It's 1975: Wikipedia tells me that colour TV came to Australia, Saigon fell, and Bohemian Rhapsody started its 32 and counting years on the radio. It's also the year that two young sisters disappeared without a trace, never to be heard from again. Murdered? Joined a cult? No one knew, and it drove their parents apart. The father hanged himself and the mother ran away to Mexico.

Now it's the present day and everyone has gotten on with their lives (those that still have them), when from out of nowhere a woman turns up claiming to be one of the girls. A liar? An attention whore? Really her? Some of her claims check out, some don't. Some of her information is public knowledge, some isn't. The woman is unstable and manipulative, but that's no reason to discount her.

This book keeps you guessing up to the final chapters. Laura Lippman knows her genre well and feeds the reader information to both build the story and throw our minds off on to tangents.

The characters don't have much depth, so the author tries to compensate by fixating on their personal mannerisms. Authors often use this technique when they have to quickly introduce a character, but Lippman uses it for ALL of them, and all the way through the book. So many pointless paragraphs drove me crazy.

What really happened seemed a bit too far fetched to me, but it was fun trying to guess it anyway. I give this book three and a half Tinky Winkys.

Man she looks like a bitch, she's paying him out for having a flaccid penis. I never pay out silpy... even though it happens ALL the time. I'm just all like supportive and stuff.

Btw, sounds like a crap book. You need to real different genres. Stop stealing Laura's reading material...
